About
May 10, 2007 by Emily Farris
A Missouri native, Emily Farris grew up eating casseroles. After moving to New York City in 2000, she began to make her own, and learned that her mother’s green bean casserole was, in fact, not her mother’s—it was the Durkee Onion recipe. Since this devastating revelation, she has committed her life to creating and discovering original casserole recipes and her Annual Casserole Party has been featured in the New York Sun, New York Post, Time Out New York and Gawker.
When not slaving over casseroles in the kitchen, Emily is a freelance writer and edits the culture blog Scanner for Nerve.com. Her work has appeared in The New York Sun, The Kansas City Star, Women’s Wear Daily, The Brooklyn Paper and Nerve, as well as numerous publications and websites most Americans have never heard of, including her own blog at eefers.com.
For nearly two years, Emily edited a quarterly advocacy publication based in Greenwich Village, NY. Emily is a volunteer tutor at 826NYC, an after-school writing lab in Brooklyn.
Shortly after moving to New York, Emily worked as a recurring panelist on an Oxygen Network segment Life in Progress, where she offered commentary on issues affecting her generation. Emily once performed a live stand-up comedy bit on the network, where she used her hometown of Independence, MO—most famous for Harry S. Truman and Crystal Meth—as inspiration, and hopes to add herself to that list someday. She would also like someone to design her a really great casserole tattoo.
Emily’s signature casserole is a macaroni and corn with caramelized onions, garlic, tomatoes and six different cheeses. She calls this dish Seduction for reasons she won’t disclose on this page but you can probably figure out on your own. (Who ever said casserole isn’t sexy? That person is an asshole.)
Emily lives in Brooklyn with her cat, Eve. Comparisons to Rachael Ray are highly discouraged and may result in violent outbursts.
P.S. She’d really like to be a judge on Iron Chef. You hear that Food Network? You hear?
